The order of commemorating the departed

A friendly guide through the memorial tradition: the stages of the ritual, the meaning of breads, the role of koliva, and the contents of the memorial package.

The meaning of the memorial meal

The memorial offering for the departed is a manifestation of mercy and love, an essential ritual of communion and prayer.

Ritual milestones

3, 9 and 40 days

The three early memorials — third day (Resurrection), ninth day (ranks of angels), fortieth day (Ascension).

One year after passing

The first annual memorial closes the main mourning cycle. Traditionally, the family offers packages to those present.

Annually, up to 7 years

The memorial repeats yearly, following the Christian order. After 7 years, remembrance remains at the family's discretion.

What the memorial package contains

Packages offered to attendees combine food with practical items, following local tradition.

Traditional koliva — wheat, walnut, honey and sugar, symbol of Resurrection.

The meaning of memorial breads

At the memorial feast, breads play an essential role — they represent faith and the light of good deeds.
